Getting Started

Updated 2026-11-03

First Spawn

You just spawned on Hubris SemiVanilla. The map is off by default. The server does not show you where you are. Open a third-party map of the server's map in your browser or on a second monitor and figure out your location from landmarks. Once you know where you are, plan how you want to play.

Defend Yourself

Your first priority is finding a weapon. Head to the nearest loot area: houses, sheds, garages. Look for anything sharp:

  • Kitchen knife
  • Kitchen cleaver
  • Fire axe
  • Baseball bat

Any melee weapon works. You are not fighting players yet. You are fighting zombies.

Kill Zombies, Earn XP

Every zombie you kill gives you experience. Early game, this is your main source of XP. Kill everything you can safely engage. Run from groups. One zombie at a time is safe, four is not.

Spend Your XP

Open your skills tab and upgrade your character. The three most important skills for new players:

  1. Cardio: faster stamina regen
  2. Exercise: longer sprint, faster movement
  3. Parkour: jump higher with less energy

These three skills change how the game feels. Put your first points into them. After maxing these out, you can optionally spend XP on other useful skills like Crafting or Survival etc. .

Time to Build a Base

Once your core skills are solid, you need a place to store loot and respawn. We have a separate base building guide that covers where to build, what materials to use, and how to defend it.

Check the base building guide for the full walkthrough.

For now, just remember one rule: type /inzone before placing your first foundation. Decay zones will eat your base if you build in the wrong spot.

Getting Around

SemiVanilla servers have two quality-of-life commands:

Teleport to friends:

/tpa PlayerName

Sends a teleport request to that player.

/tpa a

or

/tpa accept

Accepts an incoming teleport request.

Teleport home:

/home

Teleports you to your bed. This only works if you have pressed F on your bedroll at least once.

Both commands have a cooldown.

Make a Bed

This is the most important thing on this page. Without a bed set as home, you cannot use /home and you cannot respawn at your base when you die.

How to craft a bedroll:

  1. Find clothes. Any clothes. Shirts, pants, hats.
  2. Salvage them (right click and click salvage) into Cloth.
  3. Collect 9 Cloth.
  4. Open crafting, search for bedroll, craft Bedroll.
  5. Place the bedroll inside your base or somewhere hidden.
  6. Press F on the bedroll.

Do not skip step 6. Pressing F claims the bedroll as your home point. Without it:

  • The Home button on the death screen does nothing
  • /home tells you that you have no home set
  • When you die, you respawn at a random location

One F press saves you from all of that. Press it every time you place a new bedroll.
